It's Time to Join Us for the Season!

"If you can look into the seeds of time, and say which grain will grow and which will not, speak then unto me." ~ William Shakespeare

News from the Farm: The Seeds of Time...time for seeds

The first seeds for the "Pick-Your-Own" have arrived. Yeah!  It's hard to read the packages in the above photo but it includes a bag of popcorn seed 5#, sugar snap peas 5# and fava beans 5# (that's 15 pounds total in case you missed a 3th grade math class)  vs. the little tiny bag of seeds which are "Kalettes" (Brassica oleracea -- developed through traditional breeding methods crossing kale and Brussels sprouts -- maybe 1/2 ounce?) and costs more than the other 15 pounds!  Hmmm, 1/2 ounce vs. 15 pounds These Kalettes are my vegetable indulgence for this season.  It's fun to try new things.  Some girls like diamonds. I like Brassicas.  And I'm willing to pay a lot for them.

These Kalettes, we plan to have then seeded in the greenhouse and then transplant the seedlings after the last frost (approximately May 15).  We ordered 1000 seeds (1/2 ounce) which have a germination rate of 92%, so if all goes well, that means we will have enough for two to three weeks worth for the CSA.

But, you just never know what the year will bring.  Bill (Shakespeare -- the above quote) was right.  If I have learned nothing else from farming for the past 8 years (yikes! it's gone by quickly), I've learned to not be attached to the fruit & vegetables of my labors.  Somehow, it all works out.  Perfectly.

We hope you all join us for a "perfect" season!

P.S. The 2015 form is on the website.

P.P.S. We plan to have a more set schedule for the "Pick-Your-Own" this year.  And we hope to have more members visit the farm!

P.P.P.S.  I'm doing a better job with posting on Facebook.
